Commute by Running

I’ve previously written & shared photos from my commuting choices, but I thought I’d share a brief update.

Travel took me to New York City, and I had an opportunity to explore a new trip between residence and the workplace.

Trying the train, I noticed how slowly it traveled and that the distance from residence to workplace was 4-5 miles.

So I figured, why not try running it?

I had bought a nice and lightweight backpack with a chest-strap and was good to go!1

I stowed my work laptop in an office locker:

And ran home from work one day–and it was game-changing.

After work is sunset, so naturally you get to see the most picturesque views & most moderate of temperatures:

I had a blast jogging at a leisurely pace and taking in the sights and sounds, dodging traffic, absorbing the diversity of people on my route.

I was energized by the experience and followed a different route the next day, this time along the east side of Manhattan and taking the Williamsburg Bridge:

The next day, another route straight down Broadway:

What a way to experience a city–I cannot recommend it highly enough!

  1. A backpack with a chestrap is the only nice-to-have for running to prevent excessive movement. Without minimizing swaying movement, you will harm your running efficient and potentially hurt your back or cause rubbing injuries. You can of course bypass the backpack entirely by pre-staging a change of clothes/shoes, or go lighter and cheaper on the backpack.
