Two Wheels in Europe

I visited Europe for a few short weeks (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy).

I took a lot of photos of transportation concerns as I tend to do.

Here are some photo highlights I found interesting from the travels.

We’ll start off small with a familiar sight–the minimalist 2-wheel manual kickscooter:

Interesting just how minimal the lock is that’s used. Can be locked virtually anywhere.

Or not locked:

Kickscooters were in each city visited, but not as common as bicycles or e-scooters:

Next up was the popular and diverse set of cargo bicycles.

This one is a ~$3,000 EUR folding Muli cargo bike, rigged with a kids seat on the back:

This model in particular is so popular, I saw it several times:

And again (in the rear) in Graz:

These ones have really long wheel bases–a first for me:

And of course, child carrying options:

And then the improvised, cheap kind in Milan.

You can see a wooden slat is zip-tied onto the rear rack:

I’ve seen similar in New York City, using a steel oven rack!

And the expensive, luxury kind of cargo bike:

And the utilitarian, business vehicles:

Business bucket trikes as well:

Selling glasses:

Or coffee:

Mail deliveries by single-speed bicycle in Zagreb, Croatia:

And these 20”, step-through frames were wildly popular in Ljubljana, Slovenia (very inexpensive):

There were not a tremendous amount of pannier/saddlebags in use, but I did see a familiar KLICKfix adapter for handbaskets:

And some other inscrutable accessories:

One specific difference from where I reside is the rideshare bikes with kids seats:

And just generally kid-friendliness safe environments in dense, urban ares:

Bike touring seems popular, and an ideal way to travel–in this case to Bled, Slovenia:

Or as a couple in Croatia:

Of course, e-scooters are common and an economical vehicle for storage:

And come in…motorcycle-like frames:

Even if they do not win on safety, they win on economy.

Food delivery economy in action:

Speaking of economy, this monthly rentable e-scooter in Graz was a common sight:

And an always accessible get-away vehicle from the party:

Or retain some training wheels if you are a little tipsy:

E-scooters even come in 3-wheel variants, as dockless ride-share:

More dockless rentable e-bikes, a new and old model of Lime Bike side-by-side:

This rentable e-bike was particularly novel–having a shaft-driven drive chain (very rare) and a mid-drive pedal assist motor (Milan):

And speaking of dockless, dedicated bike parking was impressive:

Even if it were for motorized 2-wheelers:

We’ll end this one with a peaceful photo from the Augarten, in Vienna:

Go out there and enjoy yourselves–we only get one life!
